Una giovane eroina

Nel 1617 la Pierina aveva diciassette anni ed era di una bellezza incantevole.

La fanciulla era nata a Candia, nel quartiere Peschiera, un borgo al di fuori delle mura, da una famiglia di pescatori e uccellari, che tirava avanti fra mille difficoltà.

In quell'anno infuriava la guerra fra gli spagnoli, attestati sulla sponda sinistra del Sesia, da Palestro a Candia, e i piemontesi, che fronteggiavano i nemici sulla riva opposta del fiume, da Vercelli a Motta de' Conti.

Un giorno Pierina imboccò la strada che porta alla Villata, un piccolo nucleo oggi frazione di Candia. La ragazza, atti
